School Age 45

Taking swimming to the next level

These are our Learn to Swim development squads. Swimmers at this level will focus on improving freestyle and backstroke techniques while introducing and improving breaststroke and butterfly techniques, plus starts and turns. Endurance is increased in preparation for progression into STP Development and the Competitive Pathway programme.

At each level, swimming technique is at the forefront of our lessons so strong foundations are set for each following level to build on. Children will learn safety, confidence, and superior swim technique so they can be safer in and around water. These skills will also help them to perform well in their school swim sports and beyond.

Follow your child’s progress on your parent portal account to know exactly where your child is at by seeing what skills they have achieved and what they need to work on.

School-Age 45 classes are group lessons that run for 45 minutes.

Stingray

Stingray
Stingray level is for school-aged children who have mastered the breaststroke kick and arms and are ready to put the whole stroke together.

Ratio 7:1

Our Stingray level is for school age children who can swim easy Freestyle and Backstroke, basic Breaststroke, and perform Butterfly kick. Stingrays is our first level that is 45 minutes long, so we aim to develop endurance while maintaining our focus on technique. In this level we introduce the full stroke of Butterfly for the first time. Kicking is still a big focus in this level, as is developing skills such as tumble turns, sculling, and underwater kicking.

Goals for Stingrays swimmers:

  • Freestyle – smooth, easy, long and light (50 metres)
  • Backstroke – smooth, easy, long and light (50 metres)
  • Butterfly 4 kick drill with FINS (25 metres)
  • Breaststroke with correct kick and timing (25 metres)

Dolphin

Dolphins
Dolphin level is for school-aged children who can swim a length of breaststroke with correct technique and timing, including a glide.

Ratio 7:1

Dolphins level is for swimmers who can swim 50 metres of easy Freestyle and Backstroke, 25 metres of correct Breaststroke and have been introduced to Butterfly. This level is for swimmers who are looking to further refine their skills and stroke techniques and gain endurance. In Dolphins we continue to focus on all four strokes, along with skills such as tumble turns, sculling and underwater kicking. We introduce new skills like medley swimming, Breaststroke pullouts and diving (some terms). We want our swimmers who pass our Dolphins level to have all the skills they need to succeed in the water, whether that means continuing their swimming journey outside in Aquatic Avengers, water polo, triathlon, artistic swimming, underwater hockey, swimming for other sports, or for fitness, or just a lifelong love for the water.

Goals for Dolphins swimmers:

  • Freestyle with tumble turns – smooth, easy, long and light (75 metres)
  • Backstroke with tumble turns – smooth, easy, long and light (75 metres)
  • Butterfly with correct timing using FINS (25 metres)
  • Breaststroke with correct kick and timing (50 metres)
  • 100 individual medley – Butterfly as kick or full stroke
